postheadericon A Research Guide To The Process Of Buying Dog Food

by Amy Norman

It could be a traumatic experience simply strolling through your grocery or pet store's dog food section. You will see row upon row of different brands and types of food. But then it's not crazy old Norman but a polite young clerk offering to help eliminate the confusion brought about by the bajillions of pet food producers in America. How do you eliminate the hype and find the best food for your dog?

First, you would need to consider more than a few things if you want the right food for your dog. No one breed of dog is alike, and aside from that, you must consider the age of your dog or how healthy he is. Some things to consider when selecting the food you'll give your dog follow.

Your dog's age. Puppies are pretty much like toddlers and young children - if you have kids, you know that their nutritional needs differ from an adult's and so does a puppy when compared to adult dogs. Older adult dogs do not have the same requirements as younger adult dogs. When selecting dog food, you want to buy a food type that is just right for your dog's age or stage in life.

Health. Does your dog have a specific medical condition? If so, the food you choose may need to be partially dictated by that condition. Diabetic dogs need low-glucose foods and dogs with specific allergies (yes dogs can be allergic to all sorts of things, just like people) may require certain foods as well. When in doubt, the first person you always should be consulting would be your pet's veterinarian.

Size or Body Type. There are overweight dogs. There are underweight dogs. There are dogs who enjoy exercise and couldn't seem to get enough of it, and there are dogs who are lazy as dirt. Some dogs are small, some are medium, some are large, some are supersized while some are miniaturized. Depending on the size (or lack thereof) or fitness level of your dog (again, or lack thereof), you may need to select a special kind of food for them, or portion it accordingly.

How much is your budget? Let us not pretend that dog food is inexpensive, because it is not. Dog food is not unlike other things you buy everyday, because you get what you pay for - you knew that one was coming, right? Low cost generics and store brands will lighten the burden on your wallet, but may not be the healthiest choice for your dog as they are made with cheap ingredients and lots of fillers. You should buy the best dog food you can on your budget to help ensure your dog's nutrition.

Once you take these factors into consideration, you should be able to narrow down your search for the ideal food for your best friend.
